Parkview President, C.W. Smith announces his retirement

(Pueblo, CO August 27, 2008) –Parkview Medical Center regrettably announced today that longtime President and Chief Executive Officer, C.W. Smith has announced his decision to retire effective March 1, 2009. C.W. has been with Parkview for 24 years and has served as C.E.O for over 13 years.
C.W. was hired by Parkview Episcopal Medical Center as Chief Financial Officer and Vice President of Finance in 1985. He was then promoted to Chief Operations Officer and in 1995 he was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Parkview Medical Center.
C.W. was a driving force in implementing and enhancing Continuous Quality Improvement at Parkview. By keeping his finger on the pulse of healthcare and working with the Board of Directors, staff and physicians to complete improvement projects that benefited Parkview, its patients and the entire community. C.W. helped Parkview become a regional leader in healthcare by enhancing clinical as well as the financial aspects of the medical center. Under his leadership Parkview earned the Joint Commission’s Gold Seal of Approval; became a Joint Commission Certified Stroke Center; gained an A3 bond rating; was recognized in “US News and World Reports;” and earned the Total Benchmark Solutions Best Acute Hospital Award. C.W. led Parkview in numerous construction projects including the $20 million expansion in 2002; the soon to open Parkview- Pueblo West, Emergency Department; the latest expansion of the main campus that will be underway in September; and numerous technological advancements.
During his time with Parkview Medical Center, C.W. has also become a vital and visible part of the Southern Colorado Community and Colorado’s Healthcare industry. During his time with Parkview, C.W. served on the Colorado Hospital Association’s Board of Directors and was the 2005 Board of Directors Chairman. He was a member of the CSU System Board of Governors and during his tenure served as Chairman of the Budget Committee and Treasurer. C.W. was a member of the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Panel on Education. He sits on the Colorado Mental Health Advisory Board, University of Colorado MBA Advisory Board as well as the Latino Chamber of Commerce Advisory Board and was part of the Pueblo Health Department Building program Advisory Committee. C.W. is Parkview’s representative for the Pueblo Economic Development Corporation. He is a member of Hospital Finance Management Association, Governmental Affairs Committee, Colorado Forum, Minnequa Rotary Club and past member of the Monday Evening Club. He has served on the Sangre de Cristo Hospice Board, District 60 Vocational Advisory Board and the Pueblo Country Club Board where he was Board President in 1993. C.W. was a participant in the Leadership Pueblo Program and was the recipient of the Friend of Nursing award in 2004. In 2005, C.W. and his wife Jan were named Parkview Foundation Starlight Gala honorees.
“Over the last 24 years it has been my privilege and honor to be a part of Parkview Medical Center,” C.W. stated. “I have the utmost respect for Parkview’s Health System Board of Directors, Medical Center Board of Directors, Foundation Board of Directors as well as senior management, department directors, staff, physicians and volunteers that make Parkview a great organization. All of these individuals are part of my Parkview family and I wish them nothing but the best. Having made the difficult decision to retire”, C.W. explained, “I look forward to spending more time with my family and pursuing other activities of interest with my wife Jan”.
C.W. will continue to serve as C.E.O. until March 1, 2009 and at that time Mike Baxter, who has served as Chief Operating Officer since 2005 will be appointed Chief Executive Officer. “Mike Baxter is an excellent choice for Parkview’s next President and C.E.O. I am looking forward to working with Mike during this transition,” C.W. commented. A search is currently being initiated for the C.O.O. position.
