About Us
A Community Benefit Report for Parkview Medical Center

Parkview Medical Center was founded in 1923 and offers acute healthcare and behavioral health specialty services. The Medical Center was incorporated as a Colorado nonprofit corporation in 1983 for the purpose of conducting the day-to-day operations of the hospital facilities. Parkview Medical Center receives tax-exempt status pursuant to section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code and public charity status pursuant to section 509 (a) (1). A nonprofit organization is exempt from income tax and property tax for the activities that relate to the reason they have been given that status. Parkview, on the other hand, provides healthcare to everyone that presents at our facility regardless of ability to pay. For any activity outside of the scope of Parkview’s exemption, we pay income tax and property tax. Parkview is one of the largest property tax payers in the city, as we pay property on all our medical office buildings.

Parkview Medical Center, Inc. is locally owned and governed and part of Parkview Health System, Inc. The role of Parkview Health System is to oversee the sensitive balancing of our charitable purpose with the ongoing growth and viability of Parkview Medical Center. Parkview Health System administers the highest ethical practices to strengthen the Medical Center as a care provider and business. Parkview Medical Center has a strong sense of ownership in the community and is committed to improving the quality of life.

The hospital is licensed for 305 beds and provides a full range of healthcare services including the region’s most experienced, certified Level II Trauma Center and the region’s first certified Stroke Center. Parkview Medical Center is the leader in cardiac, women’s, emergency, and neurological services as well as behavioral health programs. As a vital healthcare source, Parkview’s service area includes Pueblo County and 14 surrounding counties, which together represent 350,000 total lives.

Parkview Medical Center is the largest non-government, nonprofit, private sector employer in Pueblo County with 1,972 employees and provides a skilled medical staff of 308 physicians. The impact of our workforce triggers a strong impact on the community as Parkview’s annual payroll contributes $78 million to the economy.

In 2007, Parkview Medical Center had 14,067 admissions, 158,728 outpatient visits, 4,921 inpatient surgeries, 6,471 outpatient surgeries and 59,460 emergency room visits. While these numbers may not mean a lot to you, they are significant in relation to the service we provide to residents of Pueblo and Southeastern Colorado every day. We provide skilled employees, dedicated physicians and state-of-the-art technology in the delivery of quality healthcare to our patients 365 days a year. We are devoted to improving the health of our community through partnerships, collaborations, resources and the most valuable asset of all, our employees.
